Information and communication technology (ICT) has enabled a global infrastructure, which allows an increasing global and cross-border data traffic over the last two decades. The "information society" is characterized by ubiquitous and omnirpresent technical networking of people and things. Thereby data accumulates in unprecedeted proporions, which allows the evaluation of investigations and prognoses that were previosly not possible.

It is not predictable which specific economic, social and socio-political effects this technical progress will have. The law has to face the changed environmental conditions. The department "Law and IT" provides the necessary basic research in the fields of IT-Law and legal informatics
