Discussion event organised by Parliament Austria

Prof Jürgen Pirker from the Department of the Foundation of Law will speak about “Individual legal approaches to the protection of minorities” as part of the discussion event “Finding solutions. How governments dealt with national diversity in the 19th and 20th centuries. From the Habsburg Monarchy to the EU.” at the Austrian Parliament.

National diversity within a state is a widespread phenomenon, both in the past and in the present. For centuries, most European states have been home to population groups that speak different languages, practise different religions and/or identify as - or are defined as - a separate ethnic group. Governments have chosen and continue to choose different approaches to dealing with the linguistic, religious and cultural diversity of their populations, which will be presented and discussed in this event.
